The inn nonetheless saw its business decline after a depression struck the young United States in the wake of the American Revolutionary War. Due to the financial constraints, Crafts was forced to sell his beloved inn and moved to Vermont, where he founded the town of Craftsbury. Now known only as the “Publick House,” the inn survived the depression to reemerged as a popular landmark in downtown Sturbridge.

The Publick House Historic Inn was established in 1771, and maintains its 18th century ambiance while providing 21st century comforts. Our 17 guest rooms in this historical setting are decorated with period antiques or reproductions and each room is unique. The rooms in the Inn are located on the second floor, and stairs are required to access them. They would arrive every morning and continue working long after every one else was in bed. The Shoemaker’s only daughter, Karen, worked along side them until Don was diagnosed with cancer 1994.

Ebenezer’s Tavern was named after our founder and keeper of the Inn, Colonel Ebenezer Crafts, who entertained Revolutionary troops hearthside with culinary feasts and specialty drinks. As a tribute to the colonel, the atmosphere has maintained its 18th century ambiance adorning oversized wingback chairs, comfortable couches by the fireplace, and the vintage brass beer taps and rum barrels. Sample our jumbo crab cakes and home-made potato chips, or our traditional meatloaf dinner and old-fashioned chicken pot pie; generous portions are served up from our tavern-style menu.

It remained one of the largest internal improvements made by the Federal Government until the Civil War and was the principal way west for at least 50 years. The road was justly renowned for the great number and excellence of its inns, and taverns. As the road wound through the Laurel Mountains nearly every mile had it’s own tavern.

Dr. Marcy nevertheless refused Crafts’ constant overtures to sell the property. Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963.
